Jan Nicol Loftie Eaton was a Namibian cricketer who played as a wicketkeeper. He made his first-class debut for the Northerns in 1999 and also played for the Namibia national cricket team. He later retired from all forms of cricket in 2006. Nicol Loftie Eaton is best known for his international career with Namibia, where he played 25 Tests and 56 One Day Internationals (ODIs).

His highest score was 188 not out against Sri Lanka in 2006. In July 2014, Eaton was named as the new Captain of Namibia, replacing Graeme Smith. After leading Namibia to victory in the 2014 ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament, he was admitted into the International Cricket Council’s Elite Panel of Selectors, allowing him to represent his country at the Test level.

Early life and career of Nicol Loftie Eaton

Nicol Loftie Eaton was born in 1915 in the town of Oshakati, Namibia to Scottish parents. He was one of six children and grew up playing cricket. In 1936, Eaton relocated to South Africa to play cricket for Transvaal. In 1938, he made his international debut for South Africa against England. He played for South Africa until 1948, captaining them during the 1946-1947 and 1948-1949 seasons.

Eaton also played for Rhodesia from 1949 to 1951, and later represented Natal from 1952 to 1958. He retired from all forms of cricket in 1961. After retiring from cricket, Eaton worked as a pruning consultant and coach. In 1986, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Witwatersrand in recognition of his contribution to sport in South Africa. Eaton died in 2003 at the age of 91 after a short illness.
