That month, he made his List A debut for Sri Lanka against South Africa and played five successive List A matches for the side before making his T20I debut against England in January 2017. He has represented Sri Lanka at the Under-19 level and was part of the team that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2012. His father, Malinga Fernando, was a pace bowler who also played international cricket for Sri Lanka.
