Asif Ali was born in Lahore, Punjab, on January 17, 1978. His father, Asif Ali, is a former Pakistani cricketer and captain. His mother, Saleema Durrani, works as a teacher. Asif attended the University of Queensland for his undergraduate studies and played first-class cricket for Queensland from 1997 to 2000. He also represented Pakistan at under-19 level and made his debut for Pakistan in an ODI against Zimbabwe in 2000. That year he also made his Test debut against Sri Lanka and went on to play 82 Tests between 2001 and 2012, scoring 12 centuries and averaging over 50 runs per innings. In 2007 he was awarded the National Cricket Foundation (NCF) Player of the Year Award. Asif retired from international cricket after the 2013 World Cup but continued playing domestic cricket until 2018.
