Tom Lexley William Cooper was born in the Netherlands on October 3, 1987. He began playing organized football when he was just four years old and progressed through the youth ranks of several clubs before signing a professional contract with Eredivisie side FC Twente in 2006.
Cooper made his debut for Twente in 2005 and went on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals. In 2009, he transferred to AZ Alkmaar and helped the club win back-to-back Dutch championships. He then signed with German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in 2012 where he spent three seasons before moving to English Premier League side Watford in 2016.
At Watford, Cooper made 43 appearances and scored one goal. He then moved to Scottish Premiership club Rangers in July 2018 and has since made six appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Cooper started playing football at the age of five with hometown club Feyenoord Rotterdam. After impressing during trials with PSV Eindhoven, he was signed to their youth academy in 2003. In 2006 he moved to Germany to join SSV Ulm 1846 and played there until 2009.
Cooper made his professional debut for Vitesse Arnhem on 12 November 2009 in a Eerste Divisie game against Fortuna Sittard. He came on as a 59th-minute substitute for Ritsu Doan and helped Vitesse score two goals in an eventual 4–2 win. In total he played 36 games and scored four goals for Vitesse before signing for NEC Nijmegen on 31 January 2013.
At NEC Nijmegen, Cooper has played 134 games and scored 15 goals since joining from Vitesse Arnhem. On 18 August 2016, he made his Netherlands international debut in a 2–1 friendly win over Slovakia. He has represented his country at under-21 level as well as making three appearances for the senior team, including one appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
