Pathum Nissanka was born on 24th October 1988 in Kolonnawa, District of Kandy. He started playing cricket at a very young age and showed natural talent for the sport. He represented his school in various cricket tournaments and even made it to the Sri Lanka National Schools Cricket Championship. After completing his schooling, Pathum joined the University of Peradeniya, where he began studying commerce. However, Pathum’s true passion was always cricket and he decided to give up his studies in order to focus on his career as a cricketer.

Pathum first came to prominence when he played for the Uva Province team in the under-19 category of the national tournament. He impressed with his batting and bowling skills and was called up to represent Sri Lanka A against England Under-19s in 2004.
