Early life and career of Dasun Shanaka

Dasun Shanaka was born on 2nd October, 1984 in Mannar, Sri Lanka. His father is a bus driver and his mother is a housewife. Dasun started playing cricket at the age of 10 and quickly developed a love for the sport. He played for several local clubs before making his debut for the national team in August, 2002. Over the next few years he won several honours including three consecutive ICC Trophy titles (2004-2006) and the Asia Cup in 2007. He made his first-class debut in September, 2005 and over the next few years cemented his place as one of Sri Lanka’s leading batsmen. In February 2010 he was awarded the prestigious ICC Test Player of the Year award and followed that up with an equally impressive performance in the World Twenty20 Championships later that year. Dasun Shanaka started playing cricket at the age of 11 in Sinhala Schools Cricket League. He made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka A against South Africa A in November 2006. He made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against Australia in December 2006.

Shanaka is a left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm off spin bowler. In January 2007, Shanaka was named as one of the twelve players to take part in the inaugural IPL auction by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for US$265,000. In February 2009, he was bought by Chennai Super Kings for US$1 million.
