Early life and career of Glenn Phillips

Phillips was born in the town of Palmerston North, on the North Island of New Zealand, to parents David and Lynette Phillips. He played cricket as a junior with Otago Volcanoes and represented New Zealand at under-15 level. Phillips then attended Auckland University College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 2009.

Phillips began his professional career in 2009, playing for the Central Districts Cricket Club in the Plunket Shield. In 2013, he signed with Hampshire County Cricket Club and made his first-class debut later that year. That season he scored 748 runs at an average of 41.92, including two centuries, and helped Hampshire to win their second County Championship title in three years. Phillips also achieved List A status for the first time that season and made his debut for New Zealand against England Lions. He finished the season with 1,034 runs at an average of 42.36, including three centuries and a half-century.

In 2014, Phillips moved to Sussex County Cricket Club and finished the season as their leading run scorer with 2,275 runs at an average of 47.09; this included 108 not out against Durham MCCU in May 2014 which was Sussex’s first Championship victory since 1981.[5] He also scored 105 against Middlesex Academy[6] – claiming Sussex’s second Twenty20 scalp of the summer – helping them reach their first final since 2009 before being narrowly beaten by Somerset.[7

The young guy Glenn Phillips came out in the limelight with his exceptional performance in the domestic cricket which obviously led to his inclusion in the national squad of the New Zealand team.

He played his first List A T20 match in 2016 in the Super Smash. In his opening match, he scored 55 runs and was the top scorer of the tournament. He scored a blistering hundred as well. Then he played the Plunket Shield season 2016-17 where he made his first class debut as well.

Phillips made his T20I debut in the year 2017 against South Africa. His first major knock was his century against West Indies in 2020. The special thing about the century was that it was the  fastest century scored by a New Zealand batsman. He was included in the T20 World Cup 2021 squad of the New Zealand team and played his first debut ODI match against Ireland in 2022.
