Paul Adriaan van Meekeren was born on June 24, 1984, in Oostende, Belgium. At the age of 15, he moved to the Netherlands to attend The Hague School of Economics and Business Administration. After two years at the school, van Meekeren turned his attention to cricket and joined amateur side ODOS-ODOS Zuid-West. He made his debut for the Netherlands in 2004 and has since played 74 international matches, scoring 2163 runs at an average of 31.10 with a highest score of 85 not out.

He also holds 10 records for the Netherlands including most appearances (74) and most runs (2163). In 2011, van Meekeren was named captain of the Netherlands squad for their first ever ICC World Cup Qualifier tournament. The team finished second behind Hong Kong but qualified for the 2013 ICC World Cup in England as runners-up behind Scotland.
