In addition to playing cricket, Liam also played football for The Herefordshire County Football Club before making the switch to cricket full-time in 2007.

In 2006, he was signed by Middlesex County Cricket Club and went on to play 101 matches for them, scoring 2,639 runs at an average of 31.40 and taking 114 wickets at an average of 34.62. His performances for Middlesex led to him being named as the 2008 ICC Cricketer of the Year and 2009 Wisden Cricketer of the Year. In 2011, he was signed by Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club where he spent three years before joining Surrey County Cricket Club in 2015.
